Shell Canada has an opportunity for a Safety Co-coordinator , in our Health Safety and Environment (HSE) department located in our Scotford Refinery located in Fort Saskatchewan , Alberta .

Job Purpose

Reporting to the HSE Manager , this safety co-coordinator will Provides leadership, direction and expertise in safety management programs to the Refinery organization. Also provides leadership and support in managing compliance with Shell standards and government legislation as it pertains to occupational health and safety. Works extensively in a collaborative manner with other Safety/Emergency Response Coordinators and Industrial Hygienist.

Specific Accountabilities

Custodian of employee and contractor safety programs; providing expert advice, interpretation, and field assessment of:
Shell HSE-MS including site management system, site safe work practices, and Shell corporate/business unit standards
Legislation including the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code and the Workers' Compensation Act and Regulation
Incorporating best practice into the Refinery
Champion of the behavior based safety program for the Refinery.
Coordination/leadership for Safety Inspectors and Safety Coaches:
Safety data compilation and assessment for the purposes identifying trends so the
organization may take corrective action.
Corporate reporting of HSE statistics.
Networking with other HSE professionals in Shell
Command Team presence as the Safety Officer during site emergency response.
Coordinate external reporting/joint investigation with government agencies including Occupational Health and Safety/WCB in the instance of a government
reportable event.
Participation as a SME for many activities which may include:
Incident Investigation Subcommittee
HSE Committee
Revision of site rules and regulations
Task analysis
Procedural reviews
Shell representative at the Alberta Petrochemical Safety Council
Incident investigation focal point/SME for higher severity events
Extensive leadership and drive around new safety activities to ensure their establishment

Key Challenges
Developing credibility and rapport with all front line groups. Establishing trust for good information sharing to maximize potential safety performance improvement. Working effectively with all groups at the site to get things done while maintaining relationships. Working collaboratively with so many players, but maintaining a consultative focus to ensure good representation from all groups.

Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Mastery of Scotford HSE-MS with specific emphasis on Safe Work Practices. Knowledge of OH&S legislation and interpretation. Safety qualification such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) in place or to be developed. Knowledge of hazards and work activities associated with Refining. Strong interpersonal skills and leadership required. Computer and presentation skills essential. IH skills an asset

Supervision Exercised: Direct supervision of 3 (potentially 4) reports.

Interfaces

Works directly with managers, coordinators, department colleagues, operators, tradespersons, contractors, contract supervision, Shell corporate and Downstream safety contacts, government agencies, industry groups.

Working Environment

Opened in 1984, Shell’s Scotford Refinery processes Alberta synthetic crude into products such as gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, propane and butane for customers across Canada. The refinery also supplies benzene to the Shell Chemicals plant located adjacent to our facility. Shell’s Scotford Refinery is one of North America’s most efficient and modern refineries, and is the first to exclusively process synthetic crude from Alberta’s oil sands. The Refinery produces more than 100,000 barrels of synthetic crude oil daily. Located approximately 40 km northeast of Edmonton, Alberta in Strathcona County, the Scotford site employs more than 750 full-time staff and long-term contractors at the Refinery and Upgrader.
