ATLAS Logistics is currently looking for a Health and Safety Manager for its new state of the art dry and perishable food warehouse in Ajax, ON. Construction of the building is underway and even though operations will begin in April 2008, we require the successful candidate to “get on board” now to lead the development and implementation of processes and tools to ensure the facility is in total compliance with all applicable Health and Safety legislation, including the registration and subsequent approvals for CFIA recognition.

Job Description

Responsible for management of day-to-day health and safety issues within the warehouse. Implement the approved health and safety initiatives to maintain compliance with Environmental and OH&S legislation. Perform inspections of the facility and equipment, identify potential hazards and recommend preventative measures. Investigate accidents and work-related illnesses. As well, support the facility in general health, safety and security compliance.
Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the day-to-day management of the health & safety issues within the warehouse and WSIB claims
• Implement and oversee safety programs
• Refines, develops and maintains H & S policies and procedures
• Conduct and coordinate training for management, supervisors and employees on health and safety practices and legislation
• Develop and maintain CFIA/HACCP certification
• Identifies key metrics, establishes benchmarks, tracks and measures performance
• Conduct safety audits and maintain records
• Provide regular reporting and recommendations
• Coordinate and facilitate the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee
• Identification of hazardous conditions and practices including risk assessments and development of recommendations
• Ensuring quality of accident investigations and the completion of documentation
• Arrange and coordinate return-to-work for employees
• Performance of Job Safety Analysis and preparation of safe work practices
• Provide support, advice and guidance with respect to all health and safety activities
• Development and communication of Emergency and Crisis Response Programs and Procedures
• Oversee site security including management of the contract security services, review of incidents and investigations and co-ordination of access card system
• Key liaison with external agencies
Abilities
• Strong analytical and influencing skills
• Working knowledge of CFIA/HACCP registration and compliance
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate employees
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Strong written, verbal, organization, communication and time management skills
• Hospitality experience a plus
Requirements:
• Experience in a leadership role, preferably within a food warehouse environment
• Relevant undergraduate degree/equivalent work experience
• Canadian Registered Safety professional designation (preferred)
• Completion or enrollment in an accredited Occupational Health and Safety certification program
• Minimum of 5 years experience
• Experience working with line management and team members
• Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation combined with training in hazard recognition, assessment and control
• Knowledge of Return To Work programs
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with all levels of the organization in a collaborative environment
• Self starting proactive individual who can work well independently and in a team environment
• Strong PC and analytical skills
