POSITION: Health & Safety Specialist
DEPARTMENT: Corporate Services
REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Human Resources
LOCATION: Initial Placement – Burford Administration Office
- Post secondary school education in Occupational Health & Safety or related discipline
- Three (3) years current related experience
- Ability to interpret and apply applicable legislation, including OHSA and applicable regulations, standards and codes, WSIA and regulations, Human Rights, Employment Standards Act, Privacy legislation, etc. and internal policies and procedures and collective agreements
- Working knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety managed systems, programs and processes i.e. risk analysis, accident investigation, workplace inspections, training and evaluation
- WSIB/MOL Certified in Health and Safety
- Knowledge of training methods including adult learning principles
- Effective time management, analytical reasoning and problem solving skills
- Excellent communication (oral and written), facilitation, interpersonal, and computer skills
- Ability to work in a fast paced team environment and ability to work a flexible schedule when required
- Ability to maintain professionalism while under pressure
- Demonstrated tact and diplomacy skills and the ability to handle confidential matters with discretion
- Demonstrated safe work practices
- Valid G drivers’ license, acceptable driver’s abstract and provision to own vehicle
- Knowledge of municipal occupations and associated equipment i.e. water, roads, emergency services, parks and facilities maintenance, etc.
- Municipal experience in a unionized setting
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation
- To promote and sustain the Corporate Occupational Health and Safety managed system and associated programs, policies and procedures.
- To support all departments in compliance with all applicable current health and safety legislation resulting in a safe workplace and educated workforce.
- To administer and manage personal, WSIB and sick leave claims including monitoring, assessment for early and safe return to work/accommodation and communication with WSIB, disability insurance provider, health professionals.
- To provide advice to all levels of staff including the Senior Management Team relative to workplace safety issues and obligations.
- To oversee the functions of the Multi-site Joint Health & Safety Committee and act as the Ex-officio.
- To act as a resource to the JHSC for Fire and Ambulance services
- Represent the Corporation to the WSIB and Ministry of Labour.
- To oversee and review accident investigations and follow up on corrective actions when necessary
- To oversee workplace inspection program including conducting inspections as required to ensure safe operating conditions and make recommendations for corrective action where necessary
- Coordination of the annual health and safety training calendar, identify training needs, develop and deliver various training programs, act as liaison to external training provider
- Other duties as assigned.
Current Salary Range: $63,900 - $74,747 (Job Grade 6) 35 hours per week
