This position will be based at the following location: Joffre Administration – Red Deer, AB  

  • This position provides the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays each week, with the requirement to report to the primary NOVA Chemicals work location on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Employees can opt out of the hybrid schedule and will be expected to work Monday-Friday from the primary work location.

We are seeking a Safety Specialist to join our Safety Specialist Team at our Joffre site, in Central Alberta, near Red Deer. The Safety Specialist Team provides occupational safety expertise, leadership and coaching to leadership and employees to ensure the safe operation of the Joffre facility.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Provide guidance to leadership to maintain 100% compliance with federal, provincial and local Occupational Safety regulations.
  • Guide, advise and maintain NOVA's Occupational Safety management systems for the site.
  • Lead the implementation of corporate, business unit and regional safety standards.
  • Facilitate site-specific safety programs designed to reduce employee workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • Promote proactive hazard awareness and recognition to reduce incidents in the workplace as well as lead and provide guidance in the investigation to identify root causes aimed at preventing future events from occurring.
  • Ensure fulfillment of the regulatory and internal reporting and record keeping requirements for occupational illnesses and injuries.
  • Represent the site by actively participating in corporate, business unit and regional safety networks.
  • Make recommendations to leadership aimed at driving corporate, business unit and regional safety initiatives at the site.
  • Participate in site project planning including safety review of projects and safety design reviews of process/ equipment changes at the site.
  • Deliver safety training for site employees and contractors; maximize the use of standardized training through client's e-learning.
  • Actively participate in and support the auditing program and ensure prompt closure of audit findings for the site.
  • Prepare safety alerts, bulletins and warnings to ensure effective communication of potential hazards to front line employees.
  • Assist leadership in the preparation and presentation of safety related materials and reports.
  • Provide support to other client facilities as requested to support regional initiatives.
  • Measure, analyze and report on safety performance.
  • Advise leadership on safety issues and coach employees and leadership on safety practices.
  • Identify and analyze workplace hazards and develop safety strategies.
  • Complete regulatory reporting and compliance monitoring.
  • Provide support to operationalize Human and Organizational Performance.

What We Are Looking For:

  • 2-year technical school diploma with typically 8+ years of related practical experience or a bachelor's degree in Natural or Applied Sciences or equivalent with preferably 5 - 7 years related practical experience
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation or equivalent preferred
  • Working knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and Code and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  • Experience in an industrial and/or manufacturing setting would be considered an asset
  • Passion for safety performance excellence

Additional Information:

  • Relocation will be considered for this position
  • Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
  • This role requires up to 10% travel
  • Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
  • Positions will include some lifting and climbing of ladders within various levels of the units
  • Overtime and callouts are a requirement of the role due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
  • In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
  • The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
